Overall, the DJI Osmo 6 is really steady and using it to capture imagery is a breeze. That said, if you're aiming to get shots like those you see in DJI's promo videos for this device, it is going to take some trial and error. You should also look at the setup process: how easy it is to mount (and unmount) your smartphone on the gimbal, and how easy it is to pair the two devices up so that they work properly. Does the gimbal offer physical controls to ensure you don’t need to touch your phone, and how long does its battery last? You could certainly argue that the OM 4 is a better gimbal than the OM 5. While it doesn’t have the mega fancy extending arm, what it does do is operate as a more versatile gimbal when it isn’t extended. Like the OM 5, the Osmo Mobile 6 has a 1/4"-20 UNC port on the bottom for tripod attachment. Attaching the tripod is recommended by DJI when capturing timelapse or hyperlapse clips. An M3-0.5 screw hole on the top of the device can be used to attach an accessory such as an additional camera lens or microphone. A Vlog Combo, that retails for three times the price of the device alone, includes a DJI Mic Transmitter and Receiver. As a disclaimer, I own an OM 5 and use it for a variety of purposes. Would I upgrade to the Osmo Mobile 6? Probably not. While the side wheel and status bar are nice upgrades, they're not substantial enough to justify selling mine to acquire the newer version – especially since the new Fill Light is also compatible with the OM 5. I'm going to wait and see what the next generation has to offer.
There are more controls than most smartphone camera apps give you, with a few exceptions on Android flagship phones. On the iPhone, it's a pro version of Apple's default camera app without sacrificing ease of use (you still can't configure time lapse settings on the iPhone's default app, even in iOS 14 beta). DJI keeps coming too fast with newer hardware versions every year while the software and users never manage to keep up or exploit the hardware to its fullest potential. This is one example of a Panorama Shot I took. Honestly, the result might be better if you took some shots and stitched them together yourself. The Osmo Mobile 6's built-in extension rod is 215mm (8.5") when completely extended and gives you the ability to capture a wider variety of angles. The front side of the device has been updated significantly and is more intuitive to use. Timelapse: there are four default ways to record this: fixed, sequence, right-to-left or reverse. You can also set up a custom motion with up to four positions for the gimbal to maneuver between. I also tried out DJI's LightCut app. Its music selection is pedestrian, in my opinion, and what you select does not override the ambient ground sounds. Manually editing clips is easy and straightforward enough, as that part of the app is straightforward, but you can get a similar experience with third-party apps such as InShot. Use USB2.0 cable to connect the OS X device and SSD Reader. Noted that the data transfer speed is reduced in this case.Zhiyun might be the biggest name in camera gimbals besides DJI, and the Smooth Q3 is just one of several models for mobile it offers. With a compact sliding design and excellent build quality, it feels broadly on the same level as DJI’s offerings. Even if it doesn’t match DJI’s handy magnetic clamp design, it does come with a built-in swiveling fill light for keeping your subject (or yourself) illuminated, and its stabilization is broadly similar to the OM 4 and 5’s. The DJI OM 4 lasts 15 hours on a single charge with a 2,450mAh battery capacity (the iPhone 11 Pro Max has a 3,969mAh battery size), which was more than enough when we were shooting with it on a hot summer weekend and charging our phone with it via the USB-A port (so handy, as we had screen brightness to the max). The two questions we get asked the most about this gimbal series when showing it off are: "How long does it last?" and "Is the battery replaceable?" In both cases, the answer from us is a smug and belabored: "It doesn't really matter". Here's a caveat: when we had our iPhone in a medium-sized case, that little bit of extra girth and a sloped plastic frame forced the iPhone to pop out multiple times. We weren't using an Otterbox Defender case, either. It was a Razer Arctech Pro – not an ultra-thin case by any means, but not incredibly bulky either. That's a concern if you are tied to a specific phone case.To balance Osmo Mobile 3, place your smartphone in the phone holder, making sure the DJI logo is facing forward with the phone camera on the left. Adjust your phone’s position until it stays still. If your smartphone falls to one side, adjust its position until it remains level. Osmo Mobile 3 can be used to charge other devices via the USB port at the right side of the handle. Magnetically attaching the claw, which grasps onto your phone and has a magnet on the other side, to the gimbal arm, which is capped with a magnet, feels firm. And yet it's easily detachable with a hard enough of pull.
